How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
  2. Multiply: 0.64 × 40 = 25.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 64%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/40, so part = 64 × 40 ÷ 100 = 25.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =64%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.6 is the 64% share of 40. The remaining 36% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 64% off an item priced $40 saves $25.6, so you pay $14.4.

Adding and taking away 64%

Increasing 40 by 64% gives 65.6 and decreasing it by 64% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 23.616, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
