How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 73 = 29.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 29.2 ÷ 73 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/73, so part = 40 × 73 ÷ 100 = 29.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*73. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

29.2 is the 40% share of 73. The remaining 60% is 43.8, and the two parts add back up to 73.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $73 saves $29.2, so you pay $43.8.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 73 by 40% gives 102.2 and decreasing it by 40% gives 43.8. These do not cancel out: raising 73 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 61.32, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
