How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 82 = 32.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 32.8 ÷ 82 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/82, so part = 40 × 82 ÷ 100 = 32.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

32.8 is the 40% share of 82. The remaining 60% is 49.2, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $82 saves $32.8, so you pay $49.2.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 82 by 40% gives 114.8 and decreasing it by 40% gives 49.2. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 68.88, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
