How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
- Multiply: 0.41 × 2 = 0.82
- Check: Work backwards: 0.82 ÷ 2 × 100 = 41%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/2, so part = 41 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.82. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =41%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.82 is the 41% share of 2. The remaining 59% is 1.18, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 41% off an item priced $2 saves $0.82, so you pay $1.18.
Adding and taking away 41%
Increasing 2 by 41% gives 2.82 and decreasing it by 41% gives 1.18. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 1.6638, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 41. 41% of 2 and 2% of 41 are always equal (both are 41 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.82), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
