How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 41 = 0.82
- Check: Work backwards: 0.82 ÷ 41 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/41, so part = 2 × 41 ÷ 100 = 0.82. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.82 is the 2% share of 41. The remaining 98% is 40.18, and the two parts add back up to 41.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $41 saves $0.82, so you pay $40.18.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 41 by 2% gives 41.82 and decreasing it by 2% gives 40.18. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 40.9836, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 41% of 2. 2% of 41 and 41% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 41 ÷ 100 = 0.82), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
