How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 1 = 0.42
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.42 ÷ 1 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/1, so part = 42 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.42. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.42 is the 42% share of 1. The remaining 58% is 0.58, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $1 saves $0.42, so you pay $0.58.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 1 by 42% gives 1.42 and decreasing it by 42% gives 0.58. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 0.8236, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
