How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 42 = 0.42
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.42 ÷ 42 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/42, so part = 1 × 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*42. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.42 is the 1% share of 42. The remaining 99% is 41.58, and the two parts add back up to 42.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $42 saves $0.42, so you pay $41.58.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 42 by 1% gives 42.42 and decreasing it by 1% gives 41.58. These do not cancel out: raising 42 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 41.9958, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
