How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 4 = 1.68
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.68 ÷ 4 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/4, so part = 42 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.68. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.68 is the 42% share of 4. The remaining 58% is 2.32, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $4 saves $1.68, so you pay $2.32.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 4 by 42% gives 5.68 and decreasing it by 42% gives 2.32. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 3.2944, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
