How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 13 = 5.59
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.59 ÷ 13 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/13, so part = 43 × 13 ÷ 100 = 5.59. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.59 is the 43% share of 13. The remaining 57% is 7.41, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $13 saves $5.59, so you pay $7.41.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 13 by 43% gives 18.59 and decreasing it by 43% gives 7.41. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 10.5963, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
