How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
- Multiply: 0.44 × 3 = 1.32
- Check: Work backwards: 1.32 ÷ 3 × 100 = 44%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/3, so part = 44 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.32. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =44%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.32 is the 44% share of 3. The remaining 56% is 1.68, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 44% off an item priced $3 saves $1.32, so you pay $1.68.
Adding and taking away 44%
Increasing 3 by 44% gives 4.32 and decreasing it by 44% gives 1.68. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 2.4192, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 44. 44% of 3 and 3% of 44 are always equal (both are 44 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.32), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
