How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 44 = 1.32
- Check: Work backwards: 1.32 ÷ 44 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/44, so part = 3 × 44 ÷ 100 = 1.32. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*44. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.32 is the 3% share of 44. The remaining 97% is 42.68, and the two parts add back up to 44.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $44 saves $1.32, so you pay $42.68.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 44 by 3% gives 45.32 and decreasing it by 3% gives 42.68. These do not cancel out: raising 44 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 43.9604, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
