How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 50 = 22.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/50, so part = 45 × 50 ÷ 100 = 22.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.5 is the 45% share of 50. The remaining 55% is 27.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $50 saves $22.5, so you pay $27.5.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 50 by 45% gives 72.5 and decreasing it by 45% gives 27.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 39.875, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
