How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 57 = 25.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.65 ÷ 57 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/57, so part = 45 × 57 ÷ 100 = 25.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*57. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.65 is the 45% share of 57. The remaining 55% is 31.35, and the two parts add back up to 57.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $57 saves $25.65, so you pay $31.35.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 57 by 45% gives 82.65 and decreasing it by 45% gives 31.35. These do not cancel out: raising 57 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 45.4575, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
