How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
- Multiply: 0.45 × 6 = 2.7
- Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 6 × 100 = 45%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/6, so part = 45 × 6 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =45%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.7 is the 45% share of 6. The remaining 55% is 3.3, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 45% off an item priced $6 saves $2.7, so you pay $3.3.
Adding and taking away 45%
Increasing 6 by 45% gives 8.7 and decreasing it by 45% gives 3.3. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 4.785, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
