How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 45 = 2.7
- Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 45 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/45, so part = 6 × 45 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.7 is the 6% share of 45. The remaining 94% is 42.3, and the two parts add back up to 45.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $45 saves $2.7, so you pay $42.3.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 45 by 6% gives 47.7 and decreasing it by 6% gives 42.3. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 44.838, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
