How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 63 = 28.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28.35 ÷ 63 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/63, so part = 45 × 63 ÷ 100 = 28.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28.35 is the 45% share of 63. The remaining 55% is 34.65, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $63 saves $28.35, so you pay $34.65.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 63 by 45% gives 91.35 and decreasing it by 45% gives 34.65. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 50.2425, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
