How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 73 = 32.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 32.85 ÷ 73 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/73, so part = 45 × 73 ÷ 100 = 32.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*73. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

32.85 is the 45% share of 73. The remaining 55% is 40.15, and the two parts add back up to 73.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $73 saves $32.85, so you pay $40.15.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 73 by 45% gives 105.85 and decreasing it by 45% gives 40.15. These do not cancel out: raising 73 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 58.2175, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
