How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 46 ÷ 100 = 0.46
- Multiply: 0.46 × 2 = 0.92
- Check: Work backwards: 0.92 ÷ 2 × 100 = 46%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 46/100 = part/2, so part = 46 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.92. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =46%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.92 is the 46% share of 2. The remaining 54% is 1.08, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 46% off an item priced $2 saves $0.92, so you pay $1.08.
Adding and taking away 46%
Increasing 2 by 46% gives 2.92 and decreasing it by 46% gives 1.08. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 46% and then lowering the result by 46% ends at 1.5768, because the second 46% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 46. 46% of 2 and 2% of 46 are always equal (both are 46 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.92), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
