How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 46 = 0.92
- Check: Work backwards: 0.92 ÷ 46 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/46, so part = 2 × 46 ÷ 100 = 0.92. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*46. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.92 is the 2% share of 46. The remaining 98% is 45.08, and the two parts add back up to 46.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $46 saves $0.92, so you pay $45.08.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 46 by 2% gives 46.92 and decreasing it by 2% gives 45.08. These do not cancel out: raising 46 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 45.9816, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 46% of 2. 2% of 46 and 46% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 46 ÷ 100 = 0.92), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
