How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 1 = 0.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 1 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/1, so part = 48 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.48 is the 48% share of 1. The remaining 52% is 0.52, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $1 saves $0.48, so you pay $0.52.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 1 by 48% gives 1.48 and decreasing it by 48% gives 0.52. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 0.7696, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
