How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 48 = 0.48
- Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 48 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/48, so part = 1 × 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.48 is the 1% share of 48. The remaining 99% is 47.52, and the two parts add back up to 48.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $48 saves $0.48, so you pay $47.52.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 48 by 1% gives 48.48 and decreasing it by 1% gives 47.52. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 47.9952, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 48% of 1. 1% of 48 and 48% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
