How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 26 = 13
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13 ÷ 26 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/26, so part = 50 × 26 ÷ 100 = 13. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13 is the 50% share of 26. The remaining 50% is 13, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $26 saves $13, so you pay $13.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 26 by 50% gives 39 and decreasing it by 50% gives 13. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 19.5, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 26% of 50. 50% of 26 and 26% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 26 ÷ 100 = 13), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
