How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 50 = 13
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13 ÷ 50 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/50, so part = 26 × 50 ÷ 100 = 13. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13 is the 26% share of 50. The remaining 74% is 37, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $50 saves $13, so you pay $37.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 50 by 26% gives 63 and decreasing it by 26% gives 37. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 46.62, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
