How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 2 = 1.02
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.02 ÷ 2 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/2, so part = 51 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.02. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.02 is the 51% share of 2. The remaining 49% is 0.98, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $2 saves $1.02, so you pay $0.98.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 2 by 51% gives 3.02 and decreasing it by 51% gives 0.98. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 1.4798, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
