How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 51 = 1.02
- Check: Work backwards: 1.02 ÷ 51 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/51, so part = 2 × 51 ÷ 100 = 1.02. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.02 is the 2% share of 51. The remaining 98% is 49.98, and the two parts add back up to 51.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $51 saves $1.02, so you pay $49.98.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 51 by 2% gives 52.02 and decreasing it by 2% gives 49.98. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 50.9796, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 51% of 2. 2% of 51 and 51% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 51 ÷ 100 = 1.02), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
