How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
- Multiply: 0.51 × 9 = 4.59
- Check: Work backwards: 4.59 ÷ 9 × 100 = 51%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/9, so part = 51 × 9 ÷ 100 = 4.59. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.59 is the 51% share of 9. The remaining 49% is 4.41, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 51% off an item priced $9 saves $4.59, so you pay $4.41.
Adding and taking away 51%
Increasing 9 by 51% gives 13.59 and decreasing it by 51% gives 4.41. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 6.6591, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
