How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 53 ÷ 100 = 0.53
  2. Multiply: 0.53 × 1 = 0.53
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.53 ÷ 1 × 100 = 53%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 53/100 = part/1, so part = 53 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.53. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =53%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.53 is the 53% share of 1. The remaining 47% is 0.47, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 53% off an item priced $1 saves $0.53, so you pay $0.47.

Adding and taking away 53%

Increasing 1 by 53% gives 1.53 and decreasing it by 53% gives 0.47. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 53% and then lowering the result by 53% ends at 0.7191, because the second 53% is taken of a bigger number.
