How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 55 ÷ 100 = 0.55
- Multiply: 0.55 × 4 = 2.2
- Check: Work backwards: 2.2 ÷ 4 × 100 = 55%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 55/100 = part/4, so part = 55 × 4 ÷ 100 = 2.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =55%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.2 is the 55% share of 4. The remaining 45% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 55% off an item priced $4 saves $2.2, so you pay $1.8.
Adding and taking away 55%
Increasing 4 by 55% gives 6.2 and decreasing it by 55% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 55% and then lowering the result by 55% ends at 2.79, because the second 55% is taken of a bigger number.
