How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 55 ÷ 100 = 0.55
  2. Multiply: 0.55 × 81 = 44.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44.55 ÷ 81 × 100 = 55%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 55/100 = part/81, so part = 55 × 81 ÷ 100 = 44.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =55%*81. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44.55 is the 55% share of 81. The remaining 45% is 36.45, and the two parts add back up to 81.

Discounts: 55% off an item priced $81 saves $44.55, so you pay $36.45.

Adding and taking away 55%

Increasing 81 by 55% gives 125.55 and decreasing it by 55% gives 36.45. These do not cancel out: raising 81 by 55% and then lowering the result by 55% ends at 56.4975, because the second 55% is taken of a bigger number.
