How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
  2. Multiply: 0.56 × 100 = 56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 56 ÷ 100 × 100 = 56%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/100, so part = 56 × 100 ÷ 100 = 56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =56%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

56 is the 56% share of 100. The remaining 44% is 44, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 56% off an item priced $100 saves $56, so you pay $44.

Adding and taking away 56%

Increasing 100 by 56% gives 156 and decreasing it by 56% gives 44. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 68.64, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
