How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 57 ÷ 100 = 0.57
  2. Multiply: 0.57 × 50 = 28.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 57%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 57/100 = part/50, so part = 57 × 50 ÷ 100 = 28.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =57%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28.5 is the 57% share of 50. The remaining 43% is 21.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 57% off an item priced $50 saves $28.5, so you pay $21.5.

Adding and taking away 57%

Increasing 50 by 57% gives 78.5 and decreasing it by 57% gives 21.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 57% and then lowering the result by 57% ends at 33.755, because the second 57% is taken of a bigger number.
