How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 15 = 8.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.85 ÷ 15 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/15, so part = 59 × 15 ÷ 100 = 8.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.85 is the 59% share of 15. The remaining 41% is 6.15, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $15 saves $8.85, so you pay $6.15.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 15 by 59% gives 23.85 and decreasing it by 59% gives 6.15. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 9.7785, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
