How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 25 = 1.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/25, so part = 6 × 25 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.5 is the 6% share of 25. The remaining 94% is 23.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $25 saves $1.5, so you pay $23.5.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 25 by 6% gives 26.5 and decreasing it by 6% gives 23.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 24.91, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
