How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 90 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 90 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/90, so part = 6 × 90 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 6% share of 90. The remaining 94% is 84.6, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $90 saves $5.4, so you pay $84.6.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 90 by 6% gives 95.4 and decreasing it by 6% gives 84.6. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 89.676, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
