How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 12 = 7.2
- Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 12 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/12, so part = 60 × 12 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.2 is the 60% share of 12. The remaining 40% is 4.8, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $12 saves $7.2, so you pay $4.8.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 12 by 60% gives 19.2 and decreasing it by 60% gives 4.8. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 7.68, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
