How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 60 = 7.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/60, so part = 12 × 60 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.2 is the 12% share of 60. The remaining 88% is 52.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $60 saves $7.2, so you pay $52.8.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 60 by 12% gives 67.2 and decreasing it by 12% gives 52.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 59.136, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
