How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 52 = 31.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.2 ÷ 52 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/52, so part = 60 × 52 ÷ 100 = 31.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.2 is the 60% share of 52. The remaining 40% is 20.8, and the two parts add back up to 52.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $52 saves $31.2, so you pay $20.8.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 52 by 60% gives 83.2 and decreasing it by 60% gives 20.8. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 33.28, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
