How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 60 = 31.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/60, so part = 52 × 60 ÷ 100 = 31.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.2 is the 52% share of 60. The remaining 48% is 28.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $60 saves $31.2, so you pay $28.8.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 60 by 52% gives 91.2 and decreasing it by 52% gives 28.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 43.776, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
