How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 8 = 4.8
- Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 8 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/8, so part = 60 × 8 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.8 is the 60% share of 8. The remaining 40% is 3.2, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $8 saves $4.8, so you pay $3.2.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 8 by 60% gives 12.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 3.2. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 5.12, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
