How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 600 ÷ 100 = 6
- Multiply: 6 × 5 = 30
- Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 5 × 100 = 600%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 600/100 = part/5, so part = 600 × 5 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =600%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 600% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 6 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 600% of its $5 cost means selling it for $30.
Adding and taking away 600%
Increasing 5 by 600% gives 35. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 600% and then lowering the result by 600% ends at -175, because the second 600% is taken of a bigger number.
