How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 63 ÷ 100 = 0.63
  2. Multiply: 0.63 × 12 = 7.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.56 ÷ 12 × 100 = 63%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 63/100 = part/12, so part = 63 × 12 ÷ 100 = 7.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =63%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.56 is the 63% share of 12. The remaining 37% is 4.44, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 63% off an item priced $12 saves $7.56, so you pay $4.44.

Adding and taking away 63%

Increasing 12 by 63% gives 19.56 and decreasing it by 63% gives 4.44. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 63% and then lowering the result by 63% ends at 7.2372, because the second 63% is taken of a bigger number.
