How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
- Multiply: 0.64 × 8 = 5.12
- Check: Work backwards: 5.12 ÷ 8 × 100 = 64%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/8, so part = 64 × 8 ÷ 100 = 5.12. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =64%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.12 is the 64% share of 8. The remaining 36% is 2.88, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 64% off an item priced $8 saves $5.12, so you pay $2.88.
Adding and taking away 64%
Increasing 8 by 64% gives 13.12 and decreasing it by 64% gives 2.88. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 4.7232, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
