How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
- Multiply: 0.65 × 1 = 0.65
- Check: Work backwards: 0.65 ÷ 1 × 100 = 65%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/1, so part = 65 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =65%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.65 is the 65% share of 1. The remaining 35% is 0.35, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 65% off an item priced $1 saves $0.65, so you pay $0.35.
Adding and taking away 65%
Increasing 1 by 65% gives 1.65 and decreasing it by 65% gives 0.35. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 0.5775, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 65. 65% of 1 and 1% of 65 are always equal (both are 65 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.65), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
