How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 65 = 0.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.65 ÷ 65 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/65, so part = 1 × 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.65 is the 1% share of 65. The remaining 99% is 64.35, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $65 saves $0.65, so you pay $64.35.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 65 by 1% gives 65.65 and decreasing it by 1% gives 64.35. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 64.9935, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
