How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 43 = 27.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.95 ÷ 43 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/43, so part = 65 × 43 ÷ 100 = 27.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.95 is the 65% share of 43. The remaining 35% is 15.05, and the two parts add back up to 43.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $43 saves $27.95, so you pay $15.05.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 43 by 65% gives 70.95 and decreasing it by 65% gives 15.05. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 24.8325, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
