How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 65 = 27.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.95 ÷ 65 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/65, so part = 43 × 65 ÷ 100 = 27.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.95 is the 43% share of 65. The remaining 57% is 37.05, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $65 saves $27.95, so you pay $37.05.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 65 by 43% gives 92.95 and decreasing it by 43% gives 37.05. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 52.9815, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
