How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
- Multiply: 0.65 × 8 = 5.2
- Check: Work backwards: 5.2 ÷ 8 × 100 = 65%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/8, so part = 65 × 8 ÷ 100 = 5.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =65%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.2 is the 65% share of 8. The remaining 35% is 2.8, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 65% off an item priced $8 saves $5.2, so you pay $2.8.
Adding and taking away 65%
Increasing 8 by 65% gives 13.2 and decreasing it by 65% gives 2.8. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 4.62, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
