How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 400 = 80
- Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 400 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/400, so part = 20 × 400 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
80 is the 20% share of 400. The remaining 80% is 320, and the two parts add back up to 400.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $400 saves $80, so you pay $320.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 400 by 20% gives 480 and decreasing it by 20% gives 320. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 384, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 20. 20% of 400 and 400% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 400 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
