How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 26 = 1.82
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.82 ÷ 26 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/26, so part = 7 × 26 ÷ 100 = 1.82. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.82 is the 7% share of 26. The remaining 93% is 24.18, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $26 saves $1.82, so you pay $24.18.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 26 by 7% gives 27.82 and decreasing it by 7% gives 24.18. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 25.8726, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
