How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 48 = 3.36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.36 ÷ 48 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/48, so part = 7 × 48 ÷ 100 = 3.36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.36 is the 7% share of 48. The remaining 93% is 44.64, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $48 saves $3.36, so you pay $44.64.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 48 by 7% gives 51.36 and decreasing it by 7% gives 44.64. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 47.7648, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
